Preparation of activated clay-stalk based activated carbon and its adsorption of COD in landfill leachate

  • Activated clay and corn stalk were used to prepare clay-stalk based activated carbon by high-temperature pyrolysis, and the activator was KOH. The physical and chemical properties and absorption characteristics of COD in landfill leachate were studied. The effects of activated carbon dosage, adsorption time and solution pH on COD removal were discussed and the adsorption isotherms were fitted. The results showed that an appropriate amount of activator could improve the iodine value and BET surface area of activated carbon, which could be 342.9 mg·g-1 and 420.34 m2·g-1 as the solid to alkali ratio was 0.4.The surface of the best carbon was irregular and porous, and porous structure was mainly mesoporous. The COD removal rate was 84%. The adsorption experimental data were fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models
