Preparation of powder activated carbon by rice husks and its adsorption capacity to phosphorus

  • Powder activated carbon (PAC) with rich microporous structure was prepared from rice husks by carbonizing, activating, pickling, washing and drying, and its specific surface area (BET) was 886.3 m2/g. The adsorption process of PAC to phosphorus (P) was studied. The results showed that the adsorption isotherm could be described by both Langmuir model (R2 = 0.9284) and Freundlich model (R2 = 0.9208), and the saturated adsorption capacity reached 6.93 mg/g. The adsorption process of PAC to P could be described by pseudo second-order kinetic equation (R2 = 0.9968), and the rate of adsorption was under the control of intra-particle diffusion. PAC, as available, cheap and efficient matrix filler, has bright prospects in ecological treatment technologies of rural sewage.

Abstract: Powder activated carbon (PAC) with rich microporous structure was prepared from rice husks by carbonizing, activating, pickling, washing and drying, and its specific surface area (BET) was 886.3 m2/g. The adsorption process of PAC to phosphorus (P) was studied.
