Abstract: Polymers of ferric-polysilicate (PFS)with different Fe/Si mole ratios were prepared and showed satisfactory stability. The prepared PFS showed good flocculation effect on the turbid water of kaolin. The results showed that the iron consumption played a decisive role on the flocculation characteristics of the PFS. The flocculation effect was good when the iron consumption was between 9 and 32 kg/t, and was considerably perfect for the iron consumption of 24 to 27 kg/t that produced the supernatant with maximum transmittance of above 95%. When the iron consumption is most proper, the ultimate floccules volume is dependent on the silicon consumption, and greater silicon consumption corresponds to larger ultimate floccules volume and higher supernatant transmittance. Zeta potential measurements show that the PFS can change the zeta potential of kaolin from negative to positive.
