Study on composting of waterworks sludge

  • The pretreatment of anti-caking and dewatering and the hightemperature aerobic composting of waterworks sludge and the effects of the compost application on gardening were studied. The results of physical composition and scanning electron microscope indicated that, the conditioner QS significantly improved the caking property and dewatering performance of waterworks sludge. The results of composting showed that, composting of the pretreated waterworks sludge and litter (the volume ration was 3∶7) with added urea to regulate C/N could be maturity after 27 days. Adding EM agent could speed the maturity of the compost and shorten the composting time to 19 days. The result of pot experiment of eucalyptus showed that, the compost of waterworks sludge could increase the water holding capacity of the substrate and promote the growth of eucalyptus. Adding EM agent to the compost is better for the growth of eucalyptus.
