Abstract: When treating the high concentrated organic wastewater in the new type sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR), sludge bulking occurred. The impact and factors causing sludge bulking were discussed. And the precautionary and recovery measures were summarized. The results showed that the removal rates of COD and TN dropped from 92.91% and 81.44% to 79.14% and 54.40%,respectively. Maybe Fusarium played a large role in the filamentous bulking. The main factors resulted in sludge bulking were low temperature and high influent concentration of COD. When the system had been recovered, this new type of SBBR was able to remove organisms and nitrogen, which showed that it had an excellent ability to restore the steability destroyed by the sludge bulking.
