Abstract: High surface area microporous activated carbons were prepared from Spartina alterniflora and cotton stalks with KOH activation under the conditions of impregnation ratio of 3.0, activation temperature at 800℃ and activation time of 1.5 h. Surface properties of the prepared carbons were performed using nitrogen adsorption, FTIR spectroscopy and SEM. The adsorption behavior of p-nitroaniline on the prepared carbons was investigated by a batch adsorption experiment. The BET surface area of carbons prepared from Spartina alterniflora and cotton stalk is 2 825 and 2 135 m2/g, respectively. The D-A micropore volume of the two carbons is 0.911 and 0.789 cm3/g, respectively. The adsorption experiments show that the two activated carbons have high adsorption capacity for p-nitroaniline. The Langmuir maximum adsorption amount was found to be more than 700 mg/g. The adsorption was found to depend on the solution pH. The Freundlich model describes the equilibrium experimental data effectively.
