Abstract: Solid samples at different depths and leachate samples were collected and analyzed in order to investigate the pollution status and stabilization degree of the open dumping sites in Nanjing. The results showed that the organic matter contents in leachate were very high, with the COD, NH3-N and TN exceeded the relative limited value 4~6, 7~10 and 4~10 times, respectively. The TOC value was about 10% and the moisture content was around 25% in the majority solid samples, which indicated that the dumping site was in its basic stabilization stage. The leachate of the solid samples were within the criteria, with COD 39~249 mg/L, NH3-N 0.9~14.88 mg/L, TN 8.82~28.14 mg/L. Then, COD and NH3-N in leachate, COD and TN in leaching solution, TOC and moisture content in solid samples were selected as stabilization assessment index and an assessment was conducted on the site. According to the assessment result, the stabilization degree of the dumping site was between basic stabilization and middle stabilization.
