Abstract: The pilot study of a novel biofilm reactor,swimming-bed biofilm reactor (SBR)with working volume of 4.8 m3, was conducted for the treatment of treated water of domestic wastewater at low temperature of 5~10℃ in the north areas of China during winter and spring. The removal rates of COD, NH+4-N and suspended particles of treated water were used as the investigation targets in pilot study. The results showed that the operating conditions of SBR, including a HRT of 4.8 h, an air/water ratio of 4∶1 with an air flow rate of 4 m3/h and a water flow rate of 1.0 m3/h, and an intermittent aeration operation with 4 h intervals between 4 h aerations at 10℃, were obtained. The removal rates of COD and NH+4-N of domestic wastewater were about 30% and 50%, respectively. However, the removal rate of suspended particles was lower. The pilot study results indicated that SBR could be applied to the removals of COD and NH+4-N of water at low temperatures in the north areas of China in winter and spring.
