Abstract: The influence of media on the formation of the attached sludge in the solidliquid separation of the novel clarifier was investigated. Experimental results indicated that duct streams could be formed around the more compact and stable attached sludge when the interface of sludge rose to the media section, which improved the flocculation effect. The minute flocculation escaped from the suspended sludge section could be trapped and removed by the media, which decreased turbidity and obtained a stable effluent quality. In conclusion, strong stability effect exists in the media section, which decreases Re and increases Fr. As a result, the flocculation of the sludge is improved and high effluent quality is achieved.
