Startup operations of the EGSB reactor

  • To ascertain the feasibility of the quick formation of the granules in the EGSB reactor seeded with digestion sludge and the possibility of the quick startup of the other EGSB reactors,the primary and the secondary start-up operations of the EGSB reactor were investigated. The start-up of EGSB reactor at medium temperature(about 35 ℃)inoculated with digested sludge was operated for 46 days. The granules formed in the EGSB reactor had good settlement property,high methanogenic activity and abundant microbes species. The method of low influent concentration and high organic loads was suitable for the primary startup of the EGSB reactor seeded with digested sludge, and at the same time sufficient N, P, S and trace metal Fe, Co, Ni should be supplied. It was very quick and only took 7 days at the medium temperature(about 35 ℃)for the secondary startup of the EGSB reactor not operated at the low temperature of 7~15 ℃ for a long periods of time. Organic load was high to 24.84 kg COD/m3·d, COD removal efficiency was 94.6%. The way of high startup load and fleetly increasing load should be applied for the secondary startup of the EGSB reactor.
