Abstract: Copper resistance and accumulation were investigated using pot culture experiments with two Daucus carota L. populations and two Elsholtzia haichouensis S. populations, from copper mine sites (Tonglushan and Chimashan copper mines) and uncontaminated field sites (Hongan County and Yanxi Lake of Wuhan city), respectively. The indices of Cu resistance in E. haichouensis and D. carota populations from Cu mine sites were significantly higher than that from uncontaminated sites. However, Cu accumulation in plant tissues was obviously different between E. haichouensis and D. carota. In E. haichouensis, most of Cu was retained in roots, and Cu concentration in plant was significantly less in Cu mine population than in uncontaminated site population;in D. carota, most of Cu was transported into shoots (Cu concentration of shoots was 1.5 times that of roots), but no significant difference of total Cu concentration was found between the two populations. The results indicated that the avoiding strategy of Cu might have developed in the Cu resistant population of E. haichouensis. However, no relationship between Cu resistance and total Cu accumulation was found in D. carota population.
